Rant: Return to Sender

photo: istock

As a promotional stunt, the cable network TV Land has somehow talked the city and county of Honolulu into accepting a life-size statue of Elvis Presley, to be unveiled next month at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center. The network has been peppering American cities with these monuments to drum up attention for month-long regurgitations of old TV shows and movies. It has foisted a Mary Tyler Moore statue on Minneapolis, a Bob Newhart on Chicago, and so on. We’ll get a bronze Elvis as he appeared in the 1973 Aloha from Hawai‘i concert, beamed to the world when the Blaisdell Center was known as HIC.

Gosh, TV Land, thanks. Elvis-themed bric-a-brac. Just what we’ve always wanted.
