MAY 1 Wear a Lei
The phrase “May Day is Lei Day,” coined by Star-Bulletin columnist Grace Tower Warren, has stuck for more than 70 years. Celebrate May Day this year with the Lei Queen and her court at Kapi‘olani Park with hula and a lei-making contest, or check out the concert by the Brothers Cazimero at the Waikiki Shell.

MAY 5 Celebrate … the Battle?
Over the years the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo has made its way into the United States. Traditionally, the day marks the Mexican victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Today, it’s an excuse to kick back a couple of cervesas.

MAY 24-28 Be a Kid Again
Head down to the 50th State Fair at the Aloha Stadium to stuff your face with cotton candy, get tossed around in the Zipper and win a teddy bear—it’s been a tradition for 77 years.

MAY 28 Honor Your Past
This Memorial Day, join the thousands who gather at Magic Island for Na Lei Aloha Foundation’s Annual Lantern Floating event. The day of remembrance features taiko drum and hula performances. At sunset, hundreds of lanterns are released into the ocean to honor ancestors and fallen service men and women.

Let Your Pooch Mingle
With 210,000 dogs on O‘ahu, your pooch is bound to find a pal at Bark Park in Kaimuki. Be advised: Do not bring food into the park, as it may cause dog fights. Log onto www.barkpark-honolulu.org for more rules and driving directions.
