How We Met

Love has to start somewhere. Here, five local couples tell the stories of when the sparks first flew.

In the most obvious ways, they were vastly different: He was a serious guy in corduroy slacks who was raised without a dad on the East Coast; she was a jeans-wearing artist from a big family in Hawai‘i. In the most important ways, they had everything in common.

Michael and Maile met each other in the lobby of their coed dorm on the first day of their sophomore year at Stanford. They sat down for an impromptu chat ... and parted five hours later. “I met the most amazing woman tonight,” Michael woke his roommate to say; while Maile kept to herself what she knew right away: “I am going to marry that man.” ...
