Get Spammed

Hawaii residents consume more Spam per capita than any other state—about six cans a year. This month, there are several ways to show your devotion to the tasty block of porky goodness. The sixth annual Waikiki Spam Jam takes place on May 3, attracting thousands with food booths and music. Prefer to celebrate Spam quietly? Pick up Muriel Miura’s new cookbook, Hawaii Cooks with Spam (Mutual Publishing), and whip up dishes like “Spambalaya” and “Spam Won Ton.” Now, for the true believers, we recommend Dan Armstrong and Dustin Black’s The Book of Spam (Atria). The Spam-lovers bible takes readers through Spam’s 71-year history, including these images of its many manifestations around the world.
